When it comes to romantic settings for a proposal, few places compare to the charm and beauty of Bourton-on-the-Water. Known as the "Venice of the Cotswolds," this picturesque village offers quaint stone bridges, charming riverside views, and timeless Cotswold architecture—the perfect backdrop for unforgettable memories. Recently, I had the pleasure of photographing Josh and Cassie's surprise proposal shoot, an afternoon filled with love, excitement, and a little bit of flexibility. Here’s how this beautiful moment unfolded, and why having a backup plan is always essential for a perfect shoot.
Josh and Cassie, visiting from New Zealand, wanted to capture a special moment during their trip to the Cotswolds. Josh reached out to me with a heartfelt idea to surprise Cassie with a proposal shoot in Bourton-on-the-Water. We worked together to plan every detail, from timing to location scouting, ensuring everything would be picture-perfect.
As a Cotswolds-based wedding and engagement photographer, I know how important it is to balance planning with flexibility. We had our primary location picked out—a beautiful spot in front of a charming Cotswold cottage —but also prepared a backup plan in case the weather or other factors required a change.
On the day of the proposal, we encountered a challenge: the original location was busier than expected. I also couldn't access the spot I needed to shoot discreetly and from the angle I wanted. Thankfully, with a well-prepared backup plan in place, we quickly shifted to a quieter, more intimate area nearby on one of the iconic bridges. The key to capturing authentic, heartfelt moments is creating a comfortable atmosphere, and the alternate spot allowed us to do just that.
Josh led Cassie to a charming riverside nook, where he got down on one knee and asked her to spend forever with him. Her reaction—a perfect blend of surprise, joy, and emotion—was absolutely magical. The serene waters and soft Cotswold light made for a stunning, romantic backdrop.
Bourton-on-the-Water’s idyllic scenery offers endless opportunities for breathtaking photographs. After the proposal, we explored the village, capturing candid moments of the newly engaged couple strolling hand-in-hand across charming stone bridges and through quaint streets. The golden tones of the Cotswold stone add warmth and romance to every frame.
This proposal shoot highlighted a crucial lesson: always have a backup plan. Weather, crowds, or unforeseen events can shift the best-laid plans, but adaptability ensures a successful session. As a photographer, my goal is to create a stress-free experience so couples can fully enjoy the moment. Preparedness allows me to focus on capturing emotions and storytelling, no matter the circumstances.
If you’re dreaming of a romantic proposal or wedding in the Cotswolds, it’s essential to choose a photographer who knows the area intimately and can guide you to the most enchanting locations. With its timeless charm, stunning countryside views, and unique venues, the Cotswolds is a dream destination for love stories.
